  1. Read the original planning dialogue and choose the best summary.

Maya: We need a practical plan for next month's community repair café. The library can offer its meeting room free, but it holds only thirty people. Jon: Why don't we ask visitors to book a time? That would prevent long queues. Maya: Good idea. Three volunteers can mend clothes and bicycles, but nobody is qualified to repair electrical items. Jon: In that case, I suggest advertising only the repairs we can provide. We could display broken electrical objects during a safety demonstration without repairing them. Maya: I'm not sure about that. Visitors might think we can fix those objects. Wouldn't a short talk about safe repairs be clearer? Jon: Yes, that sounds more sensible. What about equipment? We have a budget of £120. Maya: The local bicycle group can lend us tools. Perhaps we should spend £70 on sewing and bicycle materials, then use £50 for signs, cups and drinks. Jon: I'd rather keep refreshments simple and spend more on materials. How about £90 for materials and £30 for tea and signs? Maya: I can agree to that if visitors bring reusable cups. It would reduce unnecessary waste. We could run two ninety-minute sessions, with fifteen bookings in each. Jon: Agreed. Let's create a waiting list too, in case somebody cancels. Maya: Perfect. We now have a free venue, bookable sessions, three repair volunteers, a safety talk and a £120 budget. I'll send our proposal to the library tomorrow.

What is the main purpose of the conversation?

    • They are creating an affordable, safe event within limits on space, money and volunteer skills.
    • They are opening a permanent workshop that repairs every kind of household item.
    • They are cancelling an event because the library room is too small.
    • They are spending most of their money on refreshments.
  2. Refer to E1 and choose Jon's stated reason for asking visitors to book.

Why does Jon suggest booking times?

    • It would prevent long queues.
    • It would increase the event budget.
    • It would provide more repair volunteers.
    • It would allow electrical repairs.
